The characterization of red pigments in frescoes wall paintings has been of great interest for researchers to better understand raw material procurement dynamics, pigment receipts, stylistic evolution and to assess their conservation state. In this study a non-destructive colorimetric approach implementing a smartphone-based method was developed in order to be able to distinguish between three pigments made from minium, haematite and cinnabar minerals, and also mixed pigments, preparing frescoes mock-ups following the roman receipt described by Vitruvius. En este artículo se presentan dos documentos inéditos relacionados con la pintura al fresco de los ángeles músicos de la catedral de Valencia realizada por Francesco Pagano y Pablo de San Leocadio. Se trata de un inventario de bienes perteneciente a Francesco Pagano y un documento relativo a los andamios utilizados para la ejecución de los frescos. Su interpretación permite reconsiderar el papel asignado a ambos pintores y aporta nuevas hipótesis sobre el proceso de ejecución de esta obra. (A)

The paper introduces the splendid representations of Emperor Constantine the Great and Saint Helena in Jan Kuben’s frescos in the church under invocation of the Triumph of the Cross in Brzeg. They testify strongly of the incessant presence of the creative reflection over the Christian ancient times in the area of Opole Silesia in the period of the Catholic reform in the 18th century. Kuben’s trompe-l’oeil constitutes a wonderful combination of deeply experienced Catholic spirituality with the genius of the artist – a visionary.

The Nineteenth-Century rediscovery of the Oratory of S. Giorgio offers the opportunity to question the conservation methods, historical analysis and creative reception of fourteenth-century painting. This essay reconstructs the historical circumstances of the discovery of Altichiero’s frescoes and the consequent discussions among connoisseurs concerning the autography and the cultural value of the same.
